NYAIL Policy Positions

October 8, 2015

The Assembly Committee on Health, Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, and Task Force on People with Disabilities held a public hearing on Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment and Services in October 2015. This hearing was in response to opposition from the disability community to New York State Department Of Health’s plan to end the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Medicaid Waiver and move their services into managed care.

NYAIL provided comments to New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) to help guide their 2016-2020 5 Year Consolidated Plan. NYAIL’s comments outline a number of policy recommendations which if the State were to adopt, would significantly increase affordable, accessible, and integrated housing options for people with disabilities in New York State.

NYAIL provided testimony to the New York State Senate standing Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities on the future of sheltered workshops in New York State. NYAIL’s comments call for the end to segregating people with disabilities in sheltered workshops where they earn well below minimum wage and point to Vermont, where they have successfully closed all sheltered workshops, as a model for New York.

NYAIL submitted comments to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) in September 2015 in response to their proposed rules for Medicaid and Medicare funded long term care facilities.
